Road Trip to Malacca (2D1N)

Planning a road trip is easy, but to think overall, it is so difficult!

The Ongies had decided to plan for a Malacca trip few months back, but due to Cait was sick, they had to abandon the idea. Therefore, hubby sister had to go ahead themselves.

This is pretty weird, anyone in the household tend to fall sick when sister had planned something. So, this time round, wifey will be the in charge.

This is also their first road trip to Malaysia too.

Journey will take up about 2hr 45min, depending on the speed you traveled, and whether if there's stopping for rest.

They set off to check point around 8.20am and the traffic seem to be a little heavy. Hubby, wifey, mom and the 2 kids are in one car, while sister, bro in law and dad in another.

After passing the checkpoint, they went to petrol kiosk to get something before setting off to NSE.

At this point of time, Cait wanted to sit in hubby's bro in law car.

Suggested to go for the first rest stop at Yong Peng instead of MatChup.
It is an unpleasant scene due to army of houseflies in the area. Even the food court and fast food had been attacked by that.

In anyhoo, ideally is at Yong Peng because it is much cleaner and more variety for food. Hubby's dad is a traditional man who like Chinese food only.

So, after a short rest with their breakfast, they get on the road again.

As this is the first time hubby is driving on NSE, he need to be on form as not to fall asleep. So they had all the snacks, energy drinks on standby.

The route to Malacca is boring without radio. It is better to have their Malaysia frequency tuned, or mp3 playing in the car.

Glad that they found Hitz FM.

The sky is clear, the scenery is green, the road is not so busy... wow...

Lovely trip! Although the trip is long, just like heading to Shoalwater Bay, but at least this trip is more comfortable!

And the most luckiest thing is - Clar is asleep. So hubby and wifey are away from the noise made by Clar.

Just when they reached Malacca, it is a long Q to pass through the toll station. It is inevitable, especially this is over the weekend.

It was pouring heavily in Malacca and you hardly see the vehicle in front of you.

Drive cautiously.

Just when they were heading the town, the rain started to clear up, but it is a long-winded rain!

From the toll station to the place they stay, it will be another 35min drive.
Hubby thought that he arrive in Batam, but a nicer environment.

Anyway, wifey had booked a house via internet.

The name : My Jonker Home

Pricing is pretty cheap.

Upon reaching the location, phone the guy first. He will come immediately, but he was late for 10min on that day tho.

While waiting for him, there's another man doing the area cleaning.

Looking from far, it is actually shop house, the unit is located on second floor.

On first floor, there's a coffee shop selling seafood at night, and on the right, it is fish ball noodle shop.

You may park your car in front of the house, but suggest to shift them to the main road before 6pm. Car park coupon will be given by the owner, so, fret not.

The area seem safe, and the shop owner look friendly.

Walking up the unit, there's a glass door with security lock; you required a card access to disarm before entering - it will be given later.

You need to place the shoe along the stair case before heading up.

Reaching on 2nd floor, it is actually a dining hall with a table and chairs. There's sink for using too.

On both side, there's a doors where they will be staying. Entering the door, it look like a 3 room flat! There's living room and 3 bed rooms. Big and there's a lot of privacy. Mom really love the place because it is not as if you are staying in hotel room.

Everything is there for you, just remember to bring extra shampoo and body lotion too.

As usual, the kids are running like mad in the house.

Soon after they rested, they head out again... under the rain!

It is a bad day to walk under the rain. It is fine for the adult, but not the kids. Luckily they have enough umbrella with them, as well as rain coat.

For Clar, she seem to hate wearing the rain coat, while for Cait, does not mind anything, but insisted of being carried!

It is tiring to hold the umbrella sturdy while carrying the heavy Cait.

The rain did not stop until 6pm; that's when they were heading for dinner at Teo Soon Long restaurant.

Clar had been very sticky and kept wanted her grandpa to carry her. She was very cranky because she is very tired and wanted to nap.

Once grandpa had carried her under the rain coat, she fell asleep within minutes.

Clar was sleeping soundly while her grandpa carried her all the way in this manner. Fret not, she is breathing well from the side. They had created a hole for oxygen; that is actually the hole for the arm.

Jonker street, one of the famous area that you must visit in Malacca, is like walking along Chinatown. It is as if you are walking along Smith street to Pagoda lane, that's about it! Short, huh?

Of course the items there are even more interesting than in Singapore.

If you have the chance to head up to Malacca, do try it!

Oh yes, by 6pm, Jonker Street will be closed; stalls opening by road side. In short, like a pasar malam!

Everyone legs are tiring, especially grandpa and grandmom. Hence, stop at one of the coffee house for rest.

Hubby mom was dead tired that she breathe in hard, and of course - hungry. So wifey had ordered a bowl of laksa for her. All of them had the coffee that is named by Malaysia State! So, there's Penang, Perak...

There's few tables in the restaurant which were fully occupied, but they were led by a waiter to another corner of it, where you can have the whole Ongies family there!

Looking at the images, you can see the olden days of radio, fans, lights, television and even furniture!

After a short rest, they set their foot on the pavement and carry on walking. This time, they wanted to find where is Teo Soon Long restaurant located at.

Hubby had the phone number, but not the map. And his bro in law took a photo of the map, but was not in full! This is a big headache because they end up walking up and down, round and round the shop houses.

When they went up to the famous Melaka Church, hubby stopped everyone for a photo shoot. This is HOW BAD THEY LOOK under the rain. And Cait insisted hubby to carry her with his gigantic camera and umbrella! Chiong sua?

A moment to remember that day! Rain and super tiring!!!

Looking at this area, Teo Soon Loong is actually behind this block of shop houses, but one more street down. If you are there, it is located right behind San Shu Gong along Jonker street, turn right and all the way down from the busy street.

It is a restaurant that is not obvious at all. You need to open up your eyes at the sign board.

This is website you can get the info from.

If you really love Teochew food, this is a must-go restaurant! No Joke!

The oyster noodle is fantastic, one of the most popular dishes in the house. In fact, all of them are!

Ordered items:
Oyster noodle
Hei Zho
Vegetable
Steam fish
Roasted Pig
Or Nee (Yam paste)

For the roasted pig, you need to call in and book first! Tell you first, you hardly find such a taste in Singapore! It is yummy and tasty!

The cost for this meal isn't cheap, costing around RM500? If without the roasted pig, it will be a lot cheaper, of course.

As the restaurant is very small, for about 6 tables, it is better to call in for reservation as well. Wifey managed to secured a table at 6pm one day before. Try to call in about 10am, that is the time they are free. Do not attempt to call at 5pm, it is near opening hours. They open at 6pm only.

The boss of TSL is very friendly, he know how to entertain the guests, sit down with them to talk non stop. Even Singapore ex PM Goh Chok Tong also visited there!

Looking from outside, notice that the kitchen is actually by the road side? That's so awesome.
Don't worry, they are very friendly. Do not disturb the cook as he is busy concentrating cooking.

San Shu Gong, a place where you can get the food from. Teo Soon Long is just one street down after this building. You need to go left (from the image), then turn right into the small lane. Please do not follow the street shown on the right side of the image.

On their second day, everyone packed up and prepared to set off. So wifey called up the house owner if they can check out early.

Thankfully, he agreed and came in 15min to collect the key.

The stay is nice, comfortable, as if you are staying at home. The place is pretty secured and safe.
Idea for big family to stay together. You can even get 2 units of 6 bedrooms! Isn't that cool?

Anyway, in the morning after returning card access and key, hubby sister recommend Heng Huat Coffee Shop for the wontan noodle. The portion is not big, but yet satisfying! Better to order a bigger bowl if you are really hungry.

As the street is open for car, it can jam up easily. In order to have your breakfast there, you can try your luck by parking the car in front of the shop, but further away near the stage.

After that, carry on shopping till you are done. They had parked for nearly 45min, went for last min shopping, got the goodies before they set off. Please be reminded that you must be tactful for other drivers, make sure the vehicles can drive past your car.

After a wonderful breakfast, they set off to head up to one of the famous kueh house in Malacca - Baba Charlie!

The road is easy to find, but not the unit. It is kinda hidden in the lane, where you need to make sure you see the word Baba Charlie small signboard along the main road.

Info:
72, Jalan Tengkera Pantai 2 75200 Melaka 019-666 2907 (GPS 2.202999,102.231485)

From the image below, hubby was standing near the unit facing outside.

No photography in the house as they had stated in the house.

After buying the delicious and yummy kueh, they head off to NSE and back to Singapore in 2hr 30min. This time hubby will be leading the way.

The car seem to perform well after the road trip. Maybe clearing of carbon?

Anyway, driving on NSE is fun, but practice safety on road. When it rains, do not speed. Slow down and keep to the left although it is just 70km/hr.

Along the NSE, they had rain coming down heavily for a few times. Cait and Clar did slept in the car, and of course, peaceful. But the last 100km journey is not fun at all, because both of them had woke up, making a lot of noise and wanted to move around.

So, grand ma and wifey had to discipline them in the car.

2012-11-18 13.56.51

Raining heavily in front, see the dark lines ahead?

2012-11-18 16.07.37

Just when hubby exit Malacca toll and go onto NSE, there's one thick cabling lying on the road. Hubby rather drive ahead than swerve it because they were at the speed of 100km/hr. It is dangerous to perform that stunt.

As a result, (image above) hubby car had a nice gift from Malacca road. And because of that, the cable hit the car door then flew onto the vehicle car plate which is diagonally behind him (BIL mentioned that the plate seem to drop onto the floor).

The NSE will go all the way to Woodland check point, so there's no need to exit anywhere in JB, unless you wanted to go for car wash and have a dinner before going home.

The kids love the trip and asking for more in future.

Look like... MPV is a must!
